Self-esteem can be defined simply as one’s opinion of himself or herself–how one values, accepts, respects his own being. In other words, it is how you judge and appraise who you are as a person.
If the terms useless, worthless, ugly, unattractive, unlovable, loser, miserable and depressed are what you often use to describe yourself, you are very likely to be suffering from low self-esteem. And although it may seem as if having low self-worth poses no serious risk, studies show that low self-esteem often lead to the development of mental health problems and can even lead to death.

The way you look can affect the way you feel and as well as the way other will feel about you. You can’t help but feel good about yourself when you’re looking your best and people are likely going to treat you better.

You will likely feel less satisfied of who you are and what you have if you keep on using a friend, acquaintance or movie star as a measuring stick.
Be around people who make you feel good.
Be surrounded by people who think you are special and appreciates your individuality. Find a way to make time for these people in your life.
Make a list of your achievements and your positive inner qualities.
Take time to consider that things that have achieved in your life, the things that you do best and your traits that make your special.
Find time to regularly exercise.
This seems to be such an old and worn-out tip, but I just can’t help but include this in the list. I cannot emphasize enough how effective exercise is in making one feel positive. Not only is it capable of stimulating the release of happy hormones, it will also give you a sense of achievement.
The term ‘esteem‘ means to have respect or high regard for something or someone. If you ‘esteem’ yourself highly, therefore, you would have respect for yourself as a person and value the attributes that you have and the achievements that you have made.
This does not mean that someone who is opinionated and egotistical has a healthy self-esteem! This type of person is more likely to be behaving as if he is the greatest in order to mask insecurity.
True self-esteem implies a realistic assessment of one’s abilities and potentials—being confident, not arrogant. You need to develop a positive sense of self, as success and happiness tend to gravitate around people whose confidence that suggests glowing colors and bright sunshine on the rainiest day. People with high self-esteem look happier, healthier and more vibrant.
