Work has been proven to be the major cause of stress in many peoples lives. Recent studies have revealed that about one-third of workers all over the world experience high levels of stress and one-quarter of employees view their jobs as the number one stress inducer in their lives.
Stress in the workplace cannot be avoided, but there is a way for you to positively manage it–and keep it within healthy levels. Uncontrolled, chronic and high levels of workplace stress can cause workers to develop psychological and physiological dysfunctions and decreased productivity and a general feeling of discontent and unrest.
Work-related stress can bring about a broad array of conditions, including psychological disorders like depression and anxiety; maladaptive behaviors like aggression and substance abuse and cognitive impairment such as memory loss and inability to focus, conditions that may well lead to poor work performance, higher absenteeism, less work productivity or even injury. Furthermore, high levels of stress at work can also lead to various physical health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke and a weakened immune system.
4 Workplace Stress Reduction Techniques
I have shared with you below a couple of stress reduction techniques aimed at helping you better deal with work-related stress:
Create a balanced schedule.
A lot of people spend a great deal of their waking hours at or with work leaving very little or no time at all for other important matters like family life, social activities, hobbies and rest. Studies have shown that these people experience the highest levels of stress. A life with all work and no pleasure is sure to be a stressful one. So see to it that you map out your schedule in a way that all vital areas are covered and given their rightful portion.
Do only what you can.
People are generally inclined to think that taking more responsibilities at work is a good step towards improving their career. However, there is a great danger associate with taking on more job responsibilities than you are actually capable of this pitfall is a stress-related problem called “burnout”.
More work means more demands, information, stimuli, and intensity and when things are just too much, there is a high chance that you will end up in a state of complete exhaustion and lose the passion you once had about your job. So be careful in regulating the amount of work you subject yourself to.
Take regular breaks throughout the day.
When doing the same tasks for a prolonged period, we tend to lose our focus and our performance goes down. So try to get away from your desk or work station at certain times of the day. Use these short breaks to take a walk, clear your mind, relax and rejuvenate.
Taking short breaks recuperates your brain, eyes and your body. There is no point pushing yourself to the limit to finish a task if your mind, body and eyes are fatigued, things will consequently result to failure. So make sure to space out breaks within your day and use them to regain focus and rejuvenation.
Stop being a perfectionist.
No project, situation, or decision is ever perfect, so trying to attain perfection on everything will simply add unnecessary stress to your day. Perfectionism is not healthy and can rob you of your peace of mind, enjoyment of life and self esteem.
Getting rid of perfectionism does not mean paying less attention to your work or doing a poor job, but rather it means setting realistic goals and achievable expectations. When you set unrealistic goals for yourself or try to do too much, you’re setting yourself up to fall short. Aim to do your best, but learn to cut yourself some slack.
Stress at work is a big problem that has the capacity to affect every aspect of your health but, with the right mindset and techniques, you can handle it with ease.
