In this fast-paced society that we are living in, stress has become a normal part of everyday life.  A certain level of stress is beneficial and can help us to set and achieve goals as well as perform at a higher level of functioning.  For example, the demands of an upcoming deadline can create stress, which stimulates a person to work harder and more efficiently.

The negative stress that we know of is the overwhelming type of stress, stress that paralyzes rather than stimulates. High levels of stress contribute to decreased health and well-being and have even been proven to be a contributing factor to a great percentage of deaths worldwide. Therefore, an important part of healthy living is to learn to bring stress to manageable levels.

5 Step-Strategy To Lower Stress

To help you learn more about managing stress, I have shared below a few tips on what to do for stress relief:

Step 1:  Recognize when you are stressed.

The first thing you should do to lower your stress levels is to identify if you are actually experiencing stress. This way you will know when to take actions to reduce it.

Recognizing when you are stressed means tuning into yourself and looking for signs of stress like irritability, headaches, poor concentration and sleeping problems. There are so many signs of stress and each individual experiences stress differently.

So in order to recognize when you are stressed, it is important to observe yourself and get to know your own stress symptoms.

Step 2: Manage your time wisely.

A source of stress for many people is having too many things to do and not having enough time to do them all.

Although you can’t increase the amount of time there is in a day to accomplish everything that there is to do, you can manage your time wisely and maximize it.  What you need to do is set your priorities and use proper planning. You should first learn the art of prioritizing and then use tools like planners and to-do lists to divide your time wisely to accommodate everything that needs to be done in a certain period of time.

Step 3: Manage your finances properly.

For many people, their financial situation is the cause of their stress.

Although some people face financial difficulties because of unexpected events such as the loss of a job most people who struggle with finances are in that position because they spend more than they make. If this is true for you, then learning some budgeting skills will likely help reduce your stress levels.

Step 4: Establish and maintain healthy relationships.

The people in your life are extremely important resources for stress management.  They can be a great source of emotional support as well as a means of escape from stress.

So make sure to be in the company of people who value, respect and trust you as like you do to them. The flip side of nurturing healthy relationships is eliminating those relationships that are “toxic”, abusive or otherwise unhealthy.  Avoiding people who are negative or cause you negative emotions can significantly reduce your stress levels.

Step 5: Select an appropriate stress management strategy and apply it.

There are literally hundreds of ways to manage stress.  The strategy you use will depend on your personal preference and the particular situation that you are in.

There are actually two categories of stress management strategies: stress management strategies that address the symptoms of stress and stress management strategies that address the stress inducer.

Examples of the latter are breathing exercises, meditation, massage, progressive muscle relaxation and physical activity. While stress management strategies that address the stress include problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking.

Stress is a part of everyone’s life but if it gets out of hand, it has the capacity to degrade the quality of your life. Use the tips above to keep your daily stress to a minimum and maintain the beauty of living.
